What Is a Learning Walk?

A focused, purposeful approach to understanding classroom dynamics and improving educational outcomes.

Home Advice & Resources What Is a Learning Walk?

"A learning walk is a focused, purposeful walk-through of classrooms—designed to give leaders a real-time picture of what learning looks and feels like across a school."

It's not about judging individual teachers or grading lessons.

Instead, it's about asking, "What's it like to be a pupil in this school today?"

Done well, a learning walk helps leaders:

  • See whether pupils are engaged, focused, and learning
  • Spot what's consistent – and what's not – across classrooms
  • Understand how curriculum content is coming to life
  • Reflect on whether key school priorities (like reading, or behaviour routines) are visible in action
  • Pick up on atmosphere, relationships, and classroom culture
It's one of the most powerful tools for answering:
"Are we seeing what we think we're delivering?"

What It's Not

  • Not a lesson observation
  • Not about checking up on teachers
  • Definitely not for performance management

That distinction is critical. When staff feel like they're being judged, learning walks lose their purpose — and leaders lose trust.

When and Why?

  • Regular — so leaders stay connected to what's happening
  • Low-stakes — so staff feel comfortable and open
  • Thematic — so each walk has a clear focus (e.g. challenge, transitions, or pupil talk)

For example, a Head of School might do a walk on "how reading is taught across Key Stage 2," while a curriculum lead may focus on "evidence of retrieval practice in Year 9 science."

Over time, these short snapshots build a clear, evidence-informed picture of school life and classroom learning—not just what's written on a strategy document.

Questions to Frame a Learning Walk

  • What are pupils doing—and why?
  • Is the task pitched at the right level?
  • How are adults using questions to move learning forward?
  • What do the displays, routines, and resources say about this classroom?
  • How does this tie into our school's curriculum vision?

These are professional questions, not judgemental ones.

In Summary

Learning walks aren't about catching anyone out—they're about connecting leadership to learning, and helping the whole school improve in a joined-up way.

  • It's not about the teacher in the room.
  • It's about the experience of the learner—and the system that supports them.
